Edward L. Messer, 68, passed away Friday, April 17, 2009, after recently being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be Monday, April 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. EDT at Thomasville Road Baptist Church, Tallahassee, Fla., with burial at MeadowWood Cemetery, Timberland Road. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT at Culley's MeadowWood Riggins Road Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church Roof Fund, 222 W. 7th Avenue, Tallahassee, FL 32303, or to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308. Mr. Messer was born December 8, 1940, in Tallahassee, Fla. He served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Tallahassee Police Dept. in 2000. After retirement, he worked as a sales representative with Champion Chevrolet. The last several years he was caregiver for his mother, Betsy L. Messer, who preceded him in death on April 5, 2009. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church where he served as usher and Adult Men's SS class leader. He was a member of the American Legion Sauls-Bridges Post #13 and member of Marzuq Shriner's of Tallahassee. Survivors include his wife, Annette Messer; daughters, Kimberly K. Vaughan (Bruce) of Tampa, and Mitzi M. Bass; granddaughter, Gracen C. Bass; grandson, Gradyn C. Bass all of New Braunfels, TX; and sister, Laura A. Jones (Billy) of Wacissa, Fla. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by father, Charlie G. Messer Sr., and brother, Charlie G. Messer Jr. Mr. Messer will be remembered as a devoted son, husband, father, brother, grandfather and neighbor. Whatever the situation, he always knew how to make you laugh with a joke and a smile. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and neighbors.
