Is anyone in the Class of '59 not an Elvis fan? Maybe a few, but not many. On Monday, July 5, radio stations around the world will simultaneously play Elvis' first commercial recording on the 50th anniversary of it's release! You think you know Elvis? Take the quiz below.
That's Mutt & Jeff's Drive-in (as it was in 1959) on the left. And below is Mutt & Jeff's FAMOUS HOT DOG SLAW RECIPE!
After yrs of experimenting to get the slaw sauce right...here is what I came up with....at the 25th reunion of '59 DeWitt (he's either Mutt or Jeff) told me that all of the ingredients are there...but never would give me the recipe.
Sauce:
about 3 serving spoons of Hellmann's mayo
about 1-2 teaspoons sugar
about 1-3 T.n white vinegar
about 3-5T.BBQ sauce (not real sweet, I use K.C.Masterpiece Original)
about 5-8 T. water
salt/pepper to taste
Instructions:
mix all these ingredients until they have a sweetened slightly sharp taste and some ingredients may need to be added a bit more til you get it right...the color should be a pale pinkish clay color
Add sauce to:
1/2 medium cabbage chopped by hand into as small a pieces as you can get...(Don't uses a food processor b/c it makes the slaw too small and loses the balance between sauce and slaw)
You only need to marinate it about 10 minutes...the sauce should be a bit juicy but not overly watered down.
Serve over hot fried hotdogs...this is my husband' s former office's most requested dish for group parties...
Enjoy and drink with a Vanilla or Cherry coke :)

Got the above video from Ann Dart, who got it from Richard Presnell. Great, nostalgic details about our 1950's. Not Leon High School, but another class of 1959. Long, but worth the time.
