Lyman Fletcher, former mayor of Atlantic Beach, died Tuesday at age 78. That same day a sign went up at Dutton Island bearing the new name for the north end of the preserve: Lyman’s Point.

Fletcher was an Atlantic Beach commissioner from 1991 to 1994 and mayor from 1994 to 1997. When he was running for office, he campaigned all over Atlantic Beach, including the African-American neighborhoods that some other candidates often skipped. And after he was elected, he and his family sometimes would attend an African-American church.
He didn’t do this because of some political calculation about votes or polls. He did it because it was the right thing to do. If he was going to represent Atlantic Beach, he was going to represent all of Atlantic Beach.. ... more
